Lakes and rivers higher than normal due to recent rains
June 10, 2022 — Flows and levels in the upper part of the Mississippi Valley watershed have been steadily increasing over the last week due to significant rainfall over a period of days. Levels on the majority of the upper lakes are above target levels; and flows downstream of our dams are significantly higher than normal for this time of year. As water from the upper lakes flows downstream:
• Dalhousie Lake water levels are expected to increase approximately 20 -30 cm over the weekend.
• Mississippi Lake levels are also expected to increase approximately 10 cm over the next week.
Higher than normal levels are expected to persist over the next two weeks as excess water moves downstream through the system. Any additional rainfall will prolong this response.
No significant flooding is anticipated at this time. However, Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) reminds the public to exercise extreme caution around dams and all water bodies. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery at this time and, when combined with current flow conditions, pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from all watercourses until conditions return to normal.
