Nature Awaits at a Conservation Area

June 29, 2018, Carleton Place – Now that summer is officially here, the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) is encouraging families to step into nature at one of its three conservation areas this long weekend.

“The Mill of Kintail, Morris Island, and Purdon are beautiful areas that are perfect for a hike or a picnic. Conveniently located and at little or no cost, our conservation areas are a great way to spend a day,” said Shannon Gutoskie, MVCA Community Relations Coordinator. “They’re open to the public from dawn to dusk seven days a week and offer unique outdoor experiences to thousands of visitors each year.”

The historic Mill of Kintail is surrounded by forest, field and stream, boasting several kilometres of hiking trails. It’s also home to the museums of artist R. Tait McKenzie and basketball creator James Naismith, both born and raised in the Almonte area.

Escape the city and refresh yourself at Morris Island Conservation Area. Take a hike through the trees or stop for a picnic along the shoreline. Located near Fitzroy Harbour, the 47 hectare site features forest and river landscapes, with dedicated areas for fishing.

Purdon Conservation Area is currently experiencing its busiest time of the year as the renowned Showy Lady’s Slipper orchids are in bloom. Get an up close view from the fully accessible boardwalk that runs throughout the fen. After viewing the orchids, take a stroll through hardwood forests and keep an eye out for the many species of birds that call Purdon home.

Please note that while dogs are more than welcome at all MVCA conservation areas, it is essential that they remain on leash at all times and pet owners clean up after them.

MVCA is one of 36 Conservation Authorities in Ontario. Formed in 1968, MVCA’s mandate is to manage the watershed’s resources in partnership with our eleven member municipalities and the Province of Ontario.
