August 27, 2018 – Carleton Place If you see a white Chevrolet Volt cruising around the Mississippi Valley watershed, it is the latest edition to Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority’s (MVCA) fleet.
“As an organization dedicated and committed to protecting our environment and watershed, we need to lead by example,” said MVCA General Manager Paul Lehman. “The Chevy Volt is a great example of tangible steps we can take to help reduce our carbon footprint as an organization, and it’s also a great conversation starter.”
It takes four-and-a-half hours to achieve full charge on a 240 volt charger. When fully charged, the Volt has a range of approximately 85 kilometres, using a 111-kilowatt electric motor powered by an 18.4 kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery. When the onboard gas generator kicks in, the car can travel up to 600 kilometres. It’s anticipated that greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 81 percent.
“It has certainly drawn a lot of attention when we have been out and about in the community,” said MVCA Community Relations Coordinator Shannon Gutoskie. “This addition to our fleet helps to promote our organization and the positive work we do to help support our environment, our community and all of the residents throughout the watershed.”
The Chevy Volt will be used by staff, from stewardship and education to watershed technicians and planning staff.
“When you see our vehicle, or any of our organization’s vehicles, come up and say hello,” said Gutoskie. “We always enjoy talking to residents in our watershed, answering their questions, and talking about the many great things we are working on to help conserve the environment for future generations.”
MVCA is one of 36 Conservation Authorities in Ontario. Formed in 1968, MVCA’s mandate is to manage the watershed’s resources in partnership with our eleven member municipalities and the Province of Ontario.
