How much will a permit cost?

Conservation Authorities also regulate, under Section 28 of the Conservation Authorities Act, filling within the fill regulated area, construction within the flood plain, and alterations to watercourses such as erosion protection, crossings, and relocation of streams. Effective May 4, 2006, Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority Ontario Regulation 153/06 (under 97/04) – Development, Interference with Wetlands and Alterations to Shorelines and Watercourses passed provincial approval and is in effect. The main objective of Ontario Regulation 153/06 is the continued protection of public safety and the environment.

There is a cost for permits under this regulation. The fees are determined by the type of permit  for which you apply. We call this our fee schedule. Note that MVCA permits are valid up to a maximum of two years from the date of issuance. Permit application fees where the only change in the original application is the time frame will be reduced by 50%.

Below are the fees effective January 1, 2017:

Category I Application—$240.00
  • auxiliary buildings/structures and additions with a total gross floor area <20 square metres
  • fill placement <100 cubic metres
  • culvert replacement (same for same +/- 10%) ≤30 metres in length and and area of ≤ 0.8 metres square (1 metre diameter)
  • shoreline alterations/protection with a bank height <1.5 metres and/or <30 metres in length
Category II Application—$580.00
  • auxiliary buildings/structures and additions with a total gross floor area between 20 and 100 square metres
  • fill placement >100 cubic metres
  • culvert replacement (differing dimensions) ≤0.8 square metres in area (1 metre diameter) or new ≤0.8 square metres in area (1 metre diameter)
  • shoreline alterations/protection with a bank height >1.5 metres and/or >50 metres in length
  • private residential and/or non -municipal agricultural drain clean out
  • residential development within regulated area and outside wetland boundary

Category III Application—$920.00
  • auxiliary buildings/structures and additions with a total gross floor area >100 square metres
  • new residential dwellings
  • new single unit commercial/industrial building
  • Infrastructure modifications (bridges with span <25 metres)
  • Culvert (new/replacement) >0.8 metres square (1 metre diameter) – ≤3.25 metres square in area (2 metre diameter)

Category IV Application—$1810.00
  • infrastructure modifications (bridges with span > 25 metres, stormwater management ponds)
  • channelization
  • multiple units or coverage >1 hectare
  • culvert (new/replacement) >3.25 metres square in area (2 metre diameter)

Category V—$2360.00
  • major shoreline alterations, channelization, and new drain construction over 1000 metres
  • new bridge construction
