Conservation Authorities are responsible for floodplain management. Identifying lands that are vulnerable to flooding is an important responsibility for Ontario’s Conservation Authorities. Accurate engineered flood plain mapping is the foundation of effective flood plain management. In eastern Ontario, the 1:100 year flood plain is the regulatory standard calculated as having a 1% chance of occurring in any given year. Conservation Authorities use the mapping in the administration of regulations made under the Conservation Authorities Act.
These flood plain management responsibilities include:
- Identifying lands subject to flood hazards
- Supporting Regulations under Section 28 of the Conservation Authorities Act
- Supporting land use designations in planning documents in accordance with the Planning Act and its Provincial Policy Statement
With funding and in cooperation with the City of Ottawa, MVCA has undertaken a five year program to update floodplain mapping within the City and produce new mapping where it currently does not exist. The priority watercourses for study were established on the intensity of existing and potential future development.
