Watershed Monitoring Field Technician – 4 Months: May 7 to August 24, 2018


A key member of the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) team; the Watershed Monitoring Field Technician will assist with the implementation of watershed monitoring programs including both collection and management of data. The Watershed Monitoring Field Technician will also assist in the implementation of recommended watershed plans as per the Monitoring Strategy developed in 2016.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES (This is not an exhaustive list):
 Assist in collecting field data for MVCA’s environmental monitoring programs.
 Sample lakes for a variety of parameters such as phosphorus, chlorophyll a, pH and dissolved oxygen and temperature profiles.
 Multiple cold and warm water stream studies using the Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol (OSAP).
 Electrofishing and identification of fish
 Collection and identification of benthic macro-invertebrates.
 Take clear and legible field notes.
 Maintain field equipment, vehicles and labs.
 Maintain an accurate database and filing system.
 Participate in education and outreach: assist in the coordination of monitoring events; conduct demonstrations at community events; uphold a positive image of the MVCA within the community
 Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all other corporate/departmental policies and procedures.
 Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

 Be enrolled and returning to a relevant university or college degree in the fall (e.g. environmental science, geography, etc.)
 Familiar with both fish and benthic identification
 Use of software including ArcGIS, databases, spreadsheets, word processing
 Valid Class G Driver’s License and pleasure craft operator’s card (can earn before start date)
 Confident driving with a boat and trailer
 Ability to lift 50 lbs. and to work on uneven terrain
